Robert P. Fine is a contemporary American artist whose code-based work builds on techniques and traditions pioneered in the late 20th and early 21st centuries by computer artists such as Harold Cohen and Vera Molnar.
Mr. Fine’s work is largely representational, distinguishing it from more traditional genres of generative art which focus on the play of purely 2D geometric forms. He makes use of algorithms simulating light transport which produce subtle and textured interplays of colors and shadows evocative of Seurat’s pointillist style. His scenes include naturalistic objects formed using recursive algorithms reflecting principles of projective and fractal geometry.
In his most recent work, Mr. Fine experiments with placing iconic objects from the works of old masters into his digitally rendered scenes to remind viewers that the history Western art is a long continuum that contintues to evolve.
Mr. Fine holds a Master of Arts degree in European Intellectual History from the University of Iowa and an MBA from Cornell University. His 32-year career on Wall Street included positions as a quantitative banker at Goldman Sachs and JP Morgan in New York. Most recently, he has studied computer graphics at Clemson University with Professor Jerry Tessendorf, an Academy Award winning digital effects pioneer.
